Psi-capable. What exactly does that mean? There aren't any tests (that I know of, anyway) like that here. I didn't actually think humans had the capacity for psychic powers (if that's what you mean), but perhaps your universe is further ahead in research into the brain.

Psi-capable, meaning those particular parts of the brain are active. All humans are psi-capable to a point, which is why Vulcans, Betazoids, Romulans, and other such races are capable of speaking mind-to-mind with us, performing mind-melds, and more devious acts. If we were utterly psi-null, we couldn't be able to hear them. Imagine not having psychic 'ears' to hear.

In our case, those among the cadets who are not only psi-capable but either that particular part is developed beyond normal or other parts have become active are what are being tested for. Shielding against outside influence is the one the higher ups are most looking for to prevent loss of information during torture. Some are capable of more. I had a student that could produce fire through manipulation of the molecules of the air.

...And have you ever heard of the 'X-Men' comic books from the twentieth and twenty-first centuries? Because I recently dressed up as one of the characters and, well, talking about this is giving me some amusing mental images.

Spock and I are more then capable of testing you to see if you are. Before you go insinuating some terrible act from us, we've given the psi-tests more then once for the cadets with only minimal side effects. Every human reacts differently, like working muscles you never knew you had.

I haven't heard of such a thing.

I'm not insinuating anything. Some people might say I had too much faith, but I think I trust the two of you not to pull any stunts while you've been given leeway to roam the ship. I may take you up on your offer sometime - it's always good to know the extent of one's capabilities.

Surprising, considering the reaction we've gotten from others. Just let me know, I'll admit to a curiosity myself. My initial assumption would be that we have similar psi-capabilities.

Interesting. Considering how much of my hair I've managed to keep in my age, I would think shaving my head would be a negative impact on that.

Oh, don't get me wrong. I don't trust you completely. I just trust in the fact that you're both intelligent enough to know that trying anything while on a ship not your own in a universe not your own and surrounded by watching eyes is far, far from a good idea.

Mistrust of you =/= lack of intellect. This is a brilliant crew, just with a very developed sense of caution - as I'm sure you've found out since you've been here, we had issues recently with a genocidal maniac from another reality.

It is indeed. Smells disgusting, but the hair all grew back in a day or two - still, don't think I'll be reusing that costume idea next year. Do you do holiday parties on board your ship?
