At least there was a base to work on, Pike thought to himself. He nodded once, "Shielding is simple to do, but difficult to sustain." Pike held up a gloved hand flat in the air, then took his other hand and touched his fingertip to the center of his open palm. "Imagine this hand," He gave a small motion of his open palm hand, "Is my shielding, and on the other side is my mind. This hand," He gave a small motion of the opposite hand, "Is an outside force wishing to get through the shielding."

"There are several types of attacks that can occur from an outside force. It could be something blunt," He balled his hand into a fist and struck his open palm, "or something that pierces," He extended his index finger and poked his open palm, "or something that burns," He tapped his fingertips across his open palm in many places, "or any other multitude of things."

"Shielding is the ability to use the power of your mind to protect yourself from those different forces. It is not always a solid object that merely stands while a force beats on it. Sometimes shielding must be as slippery as soap and allow a force to slide off off it, or as flexible as rubber to allow a force to bounce off."

"You might wonder why I would give you all this information first," Pike felt like he was teaching students again, without the glaring and snickering, "You must keep these things in mind to begin with, or your shielding will become inflexible and brittle, and fall easily. Every mind arrives at what type of shielding it believes is best, and no two are exactly alike. Some minds will imagine metal plating like a suit of armor. Some minds might imagine a force field like in a brig. Some imagine shadows or light or any number of things. You will need to allow your mind to chose which creation is best suited for yourself during the exercises we will do tonight."
