Jim's eyes opened wide and he could not help raising his head slightly, as if peering more closely at Pike would alter the facts.
Of course, Pike might be lying. But Jim thought not. It didn't fit with what he knew of the man. And it fit with what he had experienced on the mission. He had never been able to get to know this Spock as well as he had wished, but he knew Spock had spoken to him, and of him, with a frustration Jim had rarely witness in the Vulcan.
"I... thank you," Jim said finally, settling back with an effort. "I had allowed myself to believe such prejudice was not a factor here." Jim felt no life was extraneous. Pike, he figured, had more purely self-preservative motives. But they were nevertheless united in not being at all lesser beings. "I'm glad Sam did not die. But he made a mistake. In speaking to you so, as well," he added. "You can, at the very least, rely on my conviction that there is no such thing as extraneous life."
