Three things happened instinctively. The first was returning the kiss, powerful and strong in it, biting sharply on the lower lip. The second was the hand that came up and cupped the back of Spock's skull. The third was the lacing of their hands together in a completely Vulcan way, something he must have picked up from his own Spock.
The pain Spock had felt was nearly missing, but now that he knew it was there, it could be barely felt. A mere twinkle in the far distance. For a human, Pike's shielding was very impressive, but not impossible.
